by SJD Accountancy on January 4, 2012

SJD AccountancyOnline job site peopleperhour.com released figures just before Christmas which indicate that the number of UK companies which were hiring IT contractors had risen by 612%. Contractors with specialist skills in e-commerce where the most highly soughtafter, with demand increasing by 102%, closely followed by IT support roles which rose by 95% and then web programming opportunities which went up by 70%.
Commenting on the figures, Xenios Thrasyvoulou, peopleperhour.com’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our figures show that IT Consultants are in high demand over the run up to Christmas. Businesses are able to increase their margins using freelancers and make the most of the extra income to be made over the festive season.”

These figures came out just after Monster revealed in its November UK Employment Index that the IT sector has grown by 25% year on year, putting it highest in Monster’s growth sector ranking. At the same time Andrew Gardner, Senior Divisional Director at Reed Recruitment’s, predicted that IT freelancers will carry on enjoying high demand during the first quarter of 2012. Noting that contractor demand has been rising ‘across the board’ and that this the trend will continue into the New Year, he added, “Businesses almost can’t do without IT now. It’s not an optional service.”
